The IBD Multi Disciplinary Team
This page tells you about our Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Team and provides an overview of the service provided at the Royal London Hospital.
This information has been adapted from the Royal London Hospital IBD Patient Information Leaflet.
THE IBD TEAM
The IBD team is made up of a range of specialists who will help with your care and treatment. We work together as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Physicians
We have a large team of dedicated and specialist consultants in IBD.
There are separate teams for Adults and Children and a joint team for Young Adults to aid with the transition period.
Nurses
Our Specialist IBD Nurses are available to offer information, education and support on any aspect of your illness or the treatment you will be receiving. They can offer advice in person (by appointment) or by telephone via the IBD helpline services. They also run specific nurse-led clinics including medicine review clinics, and they administer specific IBD treatments.
IBD Pharmacist
Our IBD Pharmacists specialise in the management and monitoring of medications used to treat IBD. They can provide you with support and information about your medications, and also ensure that appropriate monitoring is taking place both within the hospital and by your GP for specific medications using our in-house Therapeutic Drug Monitoring Database and Medicines Monitoring booklets. The IBD Pharmacist is available by telephone.
Dieticians
You may need, or want to be referred to the Hospital Dietician for help and support with your diet and nutritional needs. Please speak to the IBD Specialist Nurse or your Doctor if you would like to know more about this.
Psychiatrist and CBT Mental Health Nurse
We have an IBD Mental Health Nurse trained in CBT and a Psychiatrist who can help if you have problems coming to terms with IBD and its’ effect on your life.
Referrals can be made by IBD staff in the clinics.
General Practitioner (GP)
Each time we see you in the clinic we write to your GP to keep him/her informed of any treatment or investigations you may have.
Your GP will also be a good source of support and information between clinic appointments.
Other staff
We also have Specialist Registrars, Senior House Officers, and Research Nurses who work as part of the IBD team.
Surgeons
The Medical and Surgical Consultant teams work closely to manage patients with IBD who need an operation. IBD Specialist surgeons have now joined the Thursday IBD outpatient Clinic.
