Adult Helpline
Please note the IBD helpline is monitored Monday-Friday 08:00 - 16:00 (excluding bank holidays).
The IBD Advice Service:
You may have questions or feel unwell in between outpatient appointments. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to see a doctor or a specific member of the team at short notice given the size and complexity of our service. Therefore, we provide a dedicated email advice service only for patients with IBD. This service is managed by our experienced IBD Clinical Nurse Specialists, who are specifically tasked with handling your immediate needs. These highly trained staff can organise the investigations that are required and prescribe medication if necessary. They can resolve the vast majority of issues that you may have but will also discuss cases in our weekly team meetings. If your problem persists, they can organise an urgent appointment in clinic.
The IBD Helpline can be contacted using the email address: bhnt.ibdhelpline@nhs.net
To allow us to help you quickly, please ensure you include as much of the following information in your first email as you can:
-
your name
-
your date of birth
-
your hospital number (if you have it)
-
your symptoms
-
how long the problem has been going on for
-
whether you have already tried some treatments yourself
Please note that the advice line is NOT an emergency service. If you have an urgent clinical need, you should contact NHS 111 or your GP. If you require immediate medical care, then you should attend your local A&E Department.
The email account is monitored regularly, and most queries will be answered quickly. However, sometimes, due to the large volume of emails we receive, it may take a few working days to respond. In these cases, we request your patience and assure you that we are doing our best.
Please note that the advice service is reserved for clinical advice only.
