Our Adult IBD clinics are held on Thursday mornings.
The Young Adult IBD clinic is held every other Wednesday morning.
Appointments maybe face to face or by telephone. Please check your clinic letter carefully before attending an appointment. If you are unsure whether your appointment is face to face or telephone please contact central appointments who can check for you.
Face to Face appointments are in Out Patients in Luckes Building, Royal London Hospital.
You will see/ be contacted by either a Consultant Gastroenterologist or a member of his/her team. This may include Specialist Registrars or the IBD Pharmacist or Specialist Nurse. The team try to run the clinics to time, but apologise if there are delays before you are seen/ contacted.
PLEASE TRY TO ATTEND ALL APPOINTMENTS EVEN IF YOU ARE FEELING WELL. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOUR CONDITION AND YOUR MEDICATIONS ARE KEPT UNDER REVIEW.
If you are unable to keep your appointment, please phone the IBD secretary or Central appointments. We understand there will be situations when you can’t attend, but please give as much notice as possible so that other people can use your clinic appointment slot.
TESTS
You may need to undergo various blood tests, endoscopies, x-rays and scans from time to time. Your doctor or IBD Specialist Nurse can explain these to you and provide written information if you need it. If you have been asked to undergo a test, it’s worth checking that you have a follow-up appointment to discuss the results.
Blood tests are now in 2nd Floor, North Tower, The Royal London Hospital.
Endoscopic investigations
Long, thin, flexible tubes are used to look inside the lower bowel (colon) via the anus, or stomach via the mouth. If you are asked to have one of these tests you will be given clear information about what the test involves and how to prepare for it.
X-ray and scans
These can be helpful in managing and monitoring IBD. These tests are performed in the Imaging Departments either at The Royal London Hospital, St Bart’s Hospital, or occasionally Whipps Cross hospital so please check your appointment letter to make sure you are attending the right hospital. It may not be the same one you attend for your clinic appointments.

INFUSIONS
When you start on biologic infusions you will attend the infusions clinic where the IBD nurses will administer and monitor. Since the Pandemic some infusions can now be administered at home, however this decision will be made alongside the IBD team and the nurses will train you how to administer the injections.
The Infusion clinics are currently at Mile End Hospital.
INPATIENTS
If you need to be admitted to hospital our current Gastro ward is 13C at the Royal London Hospital.
On the ward you will be seen daily by members of the IBD team.
RESEARCH
Bart's Health has an active programme of clinical research into many aspects of IBD. This aims to help us better understand the conditions and improve treatments. All the research we undertake has been approved by external ethics committees. Sometimes you might be offered the opportunity to take part in a research study, for example of a new treatment. Do feel free to speak to the IBD nurses about studies which might be appropriate for you. You are not under any obligation to take part in any research and saying no will not affect the care you receive.
